Not so Sweet Jab: Paytm takes a playful dig at Zepto's free Soan Papdi Campaign!!!

Paytm's new campaign, ‘Iss Diwali gifting ka naya tareeka shuru karo (this Diwali starts a new trend in gifting),” comes as a surprise. Paytm is a fading brand in the payment apps. It is seen as a Nokia in that category. Just like Nokia, it grew the segment only to give way, market share, word of mouth, and top-of-the-mind awareness to Google Pay and Phone Pay. Phone Pay and Google Pay have become the default payment apps, and Paytm is slowly fading into the background.

The advertisement shows a family visiting their friend’s house on Diwali night. As they are ringing the bell, they hear voices from inside the house. The husband is commenting, “What did you get as a gift from your office?" His wife says, “Soan Papdi, what else? and adds, “If anyone else gifts me Soan Papdi, I will shove it down their damn throats.”.

Hearing this, the visiting couple hurriedly dumps the offending soap Papdi gift packet into the bushes. Pleasantries are exchanged, and the cheeky little boy asks, “Uncle, what gift have you brought us?”. The friend couple is nonplussed for a second but recovers dramatically and transfers Rs 1,100/- on Paytm, and the day is saved. But rubbing salt into the wound, he cheekily comments, “With that money, your dad can buy you gifts or can buy you—Soan Papdi!!!”.

In the present scenario, it is quite strange that Paytm launched this campaign. It was okay to talk about its own USP (it is no longer Paytm’s USP) and try to promote itself. Instead, it is trying to make fun of Zepto, who is trying to do a noble thing in trying to bring back glory for Soan Papdi.

While the Zepto campaign brings a lump to the heart and makes us smile, the Paytm campaign tries to be too smart for its own good. It is smart alerky and sounds like a campaign executed by a fresh behind-the-ears management school employee trying to be funny and falling flat on his/her face.

And while Zepto and Paytm have a symbiotic relationship. Each is dependent on the other for survival. Customers use Zepto and Paytm for convenience. So, is it worthy to make fun of your business partner? Not in my view. Both need each other to survive. All in all, a campaign that could have been avoided.

Copy writing Blunders - PhDs from WhatsApp University - Prakash Ads and Lalitha Jewellery

Common Sense is not common. It says "where culture and chaos coexist". Really why is it that no one found this offensive? The picture shows women celebrating the very iconic Battukamma festival the pride of Telugu pride!!!
BATTUKAMMA is culture or chaos? And who writes this type of copy? Maybe a Ph.D. from WhatsApp University with a Postdoctoral from Chat GPT!!!
Dictionary meaning of chaos "Complete confusion and disorder: a state in which behavior and events are not controlled by anything. For example, The loss of electricity caused chaos throughout the city. When the police arrived, the street was in total/complete/absolute chaos".
Maybe the greenhouse wannabe copywriter was trying to rhyme. Like they say in telugu, " ప్రాస కోసం పాకులాట"

Gundu sir is selling "100% No V.A Chargers". Another gem from PhD copywriters from WhatsApp University!!!

layer Shot Ad Banned - Common Sense is not Common - Worst Indian Advertisement

Ministry of Information and broadcasting, govt of India has rightly banned the controversial "Layer shot" advertisement.

The two ten-second advertisements are truly disgusting. One shows four young adults (teenagers) ogling a girl and a boy seated on a bed.

One of the four boys says, "shot maara kya (have you taken the shot) and the boy sitting on the bed says, "ha liya (yes, I have taken) and the other boy says, "Ab hamarey bari (now our turn)". The guy sitting on the bed suggestively turns his head around.

The girl on the bed recoils in horror. The camera moves to the perfume bottle. The boy picks up the perfume bottle and says, "shot tho banta hai (shot is imperative/compulsory" and the voice-over says, "Layer's shot".

The second advertisement is even worse, a girl is shopping, and she is bending and trying to pick up something.

The same four idiots (young men) ogle her back and one of them says, "hum char aur yeh sirf ek, (she is one, and we are four, how tacky).

The second boy says, "tho shot Kaun lega? (so who will take the shot?). The girl is shocked, but then noticed a single, 'layer's Shot" bottle on the shelf. One of the boys picks up the bottle and says, "shot tho banta hai (shot is imperative/compulsory".

How ridiculous. The ad is banned, but the damage is already done. What was the advertising agency thinking? That the advertisements are funny?

What do they want to convey?. That women are objects and can be had for fun?. And the company's management. How did they accept such crap? Don't they have any social responsibility?.

But maybe we are trying to close the stable  door after the horse has bolted. The advertisements had become viral and may be the advertisements has served their purpose. The campaign has created the buzz and got noticed. Any publicity, including bad publicity is PUBLICITY! Bring it on, crassness seems to be ruling the roost.

Kent Ro Tv Ad - Hema Malini - Common sense is not common

April 10th, 2019

This is the height of narcissism and fooling oneself. Hemamalini aged 71 acts as a mother to a Kid aged around 6 to 7 years old in an advertisement. Height of ridiculousness. Agreed that Hemamalini is a celebrity but should an advertising agency stoop to that level that their advertising campaign becomes a laughing stock?

comments:

Siddharth Sai: Heroes of that age still act as bachelors in movie

Shakuntala Kuchibhotla: I agree.

Rohini Pisupati: Exactly my thoughts...neither the actor nor the company thought of their own credibility before doing this...laughing stock, yes of course!

Jyothi Potluri: Where in the advertisement does the young girl indicate Hemamalini is her mom??? All the young girl said was - “my mom says...” and there are 4 other kids in the same room. It is all in ones’ imagination I suppose and in my imagination, the beautiful lady who walks in at the end can be a nanny to all those kids 😜 or grandma who is babysitting

Vijay Singh: Jyothi Potluri yes correct.

Anil Ramesh: Sure, that is the beauty of the advertisement, you can Interpret it the way you want. You interpreted it as a grandmother, but as there is no empirical proof one way or the other I interpreted it the other way and assumed her to be a mother. Like they say, Jo, to every man and woman as they feel and like.

Rajkumar Selvaraj: Actually my wife pointed it out to me.in fact, I too gave the same interpretation that Jyothi Potluri has given.

Anil Ramesh: Good for you Rajkumar Selvaraj

Rajkumar Selvaraj: Anil, they heard you. Kent does not show the kid for the past few days!

Washing dirty linen in public – How not to deal with your Human Resources! - Virat Kohli vs BCCI

” Common Sense is not common”, I often comment in my classroom. The unfolding saga of Virat Kohli vs Saurav Ganguly Vs BCCI vs Azharuddin vs Sunil Gavaskar vs every other Indian has left me bemused and perplexed, to say the least.

First let us put things in perspective. Whether we like it or not Virat Kohli is a superstar cricketer. His popularity is phenomenal, only second to Sachin Tendulkar and his records speak for themselves. His captaincy record has been outstanding and his win percentage too has been good. His only blemish, not winning any ICC championships.

But why blame him? Even the great Sachin Tendulkar was not a great captain. We were lucky to have a Dhoni who did so well in ICC championships. But to hound and play the fool with Virat Kohli is not done at all.

First of all, Saurav Ganguly says that he asked Virat Kohli to reconsider his decision to give up T20I captaincy. Immediately Virat Kohli says that there was no such communication to him and that the decision to relieve him of ODI captaincy was conveyed only 90 minutes before the selection committee meeting.

Fine, BCCI. Why can’t you have all these discussions in-camera. Why do you need to wash your dirty linen in public? Then suddenly Rohit Sharma becomes injured and will not play test matches. On cue Virat Kohli says that it is his daughter’s birthday in January 2022 and that he would not play in the ODI series against south Africa.

Katti or tit for tat. BCCI has become the laughing stock of the world. And the comedy has yet not ended, Virat Kohli now says that he is available to play the Odo series against South Africa. One thing that BCCI has to realize is that Virat Kohli is a big draw and a superstar cricketer. It is better to deal with him with butter gloves.

BCCI is known to grovel before superstars. They had to humour Kapil Dev till he reached 432 wickets and had to put up with Sachin Tendulkar till he got 100 international hundreds and played 200 test matches.

I am sure that BCCI will placate Virat Kohli too. Why in the world would BCCI want to kill its golden goose! A goose that lays eggs worth crores of rupees!

Common Sense is not Common - 15 minutes of Fame - Krispycreme Vs AtilisGym!

First published on Facebook on 26th March 2021

When Krispykreme started giving free donuts for getting CoVid vaccination shots, AtilisGym is giving away free membership for all who don't get the vaccination. The reason "they believe in health - the real way - exercise, good diet, plenty of vitamin D, and an environment to de-stress".

While the intention is appreciable, the path is questionable. Encouraging people not to take vaccination is downright outrageous especially in a country where 3.5 crore people are infected and 5.65 lakh people have died due to the pandemic.

This reminds me of the concept  "15 minutes of fame which is short-lived media publicity or celebrity or an individual or phenomenon".

The expression was inspired by Andy Warhol's words "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes"
